Lawnmowers are a product category with a lot of variation, and while it’s nice to have some choice sometimes you’re just looking for a simple product that can get the job done. In fact, it can be a little frustrating trying to find a reliable mower that doesn’t include a whole lot of bells and whistles that you simply don’t need. If you’re the type of person that just wants a barebones basic lawnmower that’s gas powered and capable of cutting an average sized lawn you’re not alone.
A lawnmower that may interest you is the Yard Machines 140cc 20-Inch Push Mower. This is a simple little mower minus all the frills, but it’s more than capable of cutting a decent sized lawn. Best of all, it retails for well under $250, making it one of the more affordable gas mowers on the market.
For the purpose of cutting your lawn this Yard Machines mower uses a 140 cc engine that’s adequate in most cases. It’s not a beast by any means, but for the average lawn you should have no problem cutting through your grass with this machine. It does have the extra pep you would expect with a gas powered mower which gives it an advantage over many electric models.
The Deck’s All Right
Unless you want to be cutting your lawn for hours at a time you’ll want to pay close attention to how wide the cutting deck is; for this model you’re looking at about 20 inches. It certainly isn’t the widest cutting deck on a lawn mower I’ve seen, but it’s wide enough to cut your lawn in a reasonable amount of time. The cutting deck features a sturdy steel frame and is likely to last you through quite a few cutting seasons.
Simplified Height Adjustment
This mower really is pretty bare bones – there is no bag attachment, there’s no mulch capability, and it’s certainly not self-propelled – but what you do get is a decent mower that can get the job done and you can adjust the height of your wheels, which is a bonus. The wheels are adjusted manually and you can choose from three different height positions.
Starting this mower is pretty straightforward. You simply prime it, yank on the pulley while the handle’s pulled back, and you’re off to the races. The main drawback of this type of mower is that yanking on the pulley can be a little bit of an arduous task if you have some physical constraints – it’s definitely not something you want to do if you’re experiencing back pain. To be fair though, this is a mower that doesn’t really require a hard yank to get it going. I can tell you this from first-hand knowledge as my father owns this exact model.
Maneuver with Ease
Getting around your yard shouldn’t be a problem with this mower as it has four evenly-sized, 7-inch wheels made out of a durable plastic that makes turning the mower pretty easy compared to some other gas-powered mowers.
Apart from the environmental impact of a gas-powered mower, another reason people often shy away from them is because of their extra weight. If you’re suffering from any kind of physical ailment, or if you simply don’t like to lift heavy objects, then a gas-powered mower may be something you’ve been avoiding. You might be surprised to know that this particular entry-level model only weighs about 48 pounds, which is lighter than some electric and battery-powered mowers on the market today. If one of your primary concerns when looking for a mower is whether or not you can easily lift it to put it away or to move away from an obstacle in your way, then this mower should probably make your short list.
Not the Best Warranty
One thing that is bound to disappoint you though is the length of warranty offered for this Yard Machines mower. The standard warranty is only two years, which isn’t really that long for this type of product. It’s also a limited warranty so not everything is covered; you might find yourself footing the bill even within the two-year warranty period. In fairness, most lawnmowers do offer limited warranties though – I guess it just isn’t a perfect world.
Don’t Go Too Tall
This is a decent little lawnmower, but it has some definite limitations. It will do fine on your typical medium-sized lawn that gets cut on a regular basis, but if you’re away for a couple of weeks and you aren’t able to find someone to cut your lawn in your absence you may have difficulties when you get back home. This little mower doesn’t do so well in tall grass as it tends to get bogged down and even stall on occasion. If you’re careful you should be able to plow through it, but you may have to lift the mower slightly from time to time when you feel it stalling, and you’re definitely going to need a little patience.
Some Assembly Required
This isn’t a mower that comes pre-assembled, but not many of them do, in all honesty. The problem with this particular model, as indicated by many customer comments, is that it seems the instructions aren’t entirely clear. That means if you’re not a patient individual or you’re just not very handy at figuring mechanical things out, you may want to steer clear of this lawnmower or find someone to put it together for you – someone who is a little more mechanically inclined.
A Good Entry-Level Model
The Yard Machines 140cc 20-Inch Push Mower will never be mistaken as the best lawnmower on the market by any means, but it does a decent job for a reasonable price. It’s also quite lightweight and you can adjust the wheels, which is always a good thing. If you like the convenience of a gas-powered mower and you want to maintain a strict budget, this is a good entry-level model for starting out.
