Cutting your lawn can be a challenge if you have a larger lawn, or if you simply suffer from chronic back pain that makes such a mundane activity a monumental task. Fortunately these days there are a lot of great lawnmowers out there that can make your life a lot easier. You might want to consider a riding lawnmower if you have back problems, but the vibration through the machine as you ride over a bump on your lawn might be just as bad. Perhaps the better option is to look for a top quality self-propelled lawnmower that allows you to cut your lawn with minimal effort while being able to stand up straight instead of bent over a steering wheel.
There are dozens of choices when it comes to self-propelled lawn mowers these days and one that I’d like to take a closer look at is the Husqvarna 961450021 HU800AWDH . This is a machine with a lot of great features and of course it does offer the self-propelled option we’ve been talking about. This mower will cost a little more than your entry-level models, but it’s still fairly affordable at under $600.
If you’re looking at a gas powered mower you have to pay close attention to the engine, and this model by Husqvarna comes equipped with a reliable Honda engine. It’s a powerful little engine with 190 CC’s that should be more than enough to handle most lawn cutting duties you’ll put it through. Best of all it’s a Honda engine, which means you can be relatively sure that it will last you a long time.
All Wheel Drive
As we’ve already mentioned in the introduction, this is a mower that comes equipped with a self-propelled feature. That really is a great option to have if you have any kind of health concerns but still want to maintain your independence and be able to cut your own lawn. Best of all it’s also all-wheel drive, which means you really won’t have to put much effort into cutting your lawn at all – all you have to do is keep the mower aimed straight and make the turns when necessary.
Trigger Speed Controls
The self-propelled features are controlled using a trigger mechanism located on the handle, which will also let you control the speed at which the mower moves. There are several different options so that you can set it at a pace that’s comfortable for you. If you’re happy to mow at a nice leisurely pace you can do so, but if you want to get things done a little quicker you can simply ramp up the speed.
Wider Deck, Less Work
I’m always disappointed when I come across a lawnmower with a cutting deck that’s less than 20 inches, as that means a lot more work for you because of the extra passes you have to do to finish cutting your lawn. This mower has a wide cutting deck of 22 inches, which is definitely better than average and a nice manageable width as well.
The Power of Three
It’s become almost mandatory for lawnmowers these days to come equipped with a mulch option, the option to bag your clippings, and the option to side discharge your clippings, and this mower doesn’t disappoint. You have the option of all three of these features and if you do choose the bagged option, the bag is included with the mower as well.
Some mowers come equipped with four wheels of exactly the same size; while that configuration works okay, it’s not ideal. The Husqvarna 961450021 HU800AWDH does not have four wheels of equal size as the rear wheels are actually a bit larger. According to the manufacturer this rear Hi-Wheel configuration allows for greater maneuverability and it can also make turning a little easier as well.
My current mower is not the most ergonomically designed machine; when I’m finished mowing the lawn I can definitely feel it in my back and that’s a common problem with many lawnmowers. This mower by Husqvarna is ergonomically designed to ensure back problems can be minimized and you can adjust the height of the handle if necessary.
A Bit of a Weight Problem
One thing that I definitely didn’t like about this mower was its extra weight. This mower weighs more than 100 pounds and that makes it difficult to lift, so you’ll need a big area to store this one in as you definitely won’t be hanging it anywhere. The extra weight isn’t really a problem when you’re actually mowing the lawn as it is self-propelled, but when the machine’s turned off and you’re trying to maneuver it into the garage, that’s when the difficulties will begin.
Another issue with this mower is that according to quite a few customers the deck design isn’t the best, resulting in consistent clogging while you’re mowing. That’s a particular problem if you’re trying to cut through wet grass as you’ll have to continuously turn the mower off and remove big clumps of grass from around the blade. That’s an annoying problem to deal with, to say the least.
One to Think about
The Husqvarna 961450021 HU800AWDH is a lawnmower with some positive attributes such as the self-propelled feature with speed controls, as well as the ergonomic design of the machine. These are some features that most people will find enticing, but the overall weight of the machine is a concern as well as the consistent clogging problems that seem to be a common concern. It’s certainly a mower to think about, but I can’t help but feel that there are better options out there.
