A couple of years before my family purchased a riding lawnmower we actually used to use an old-fashioned push reel lawnmower which was, suffice it to say, a bit of an adventure. At the time we had about an average sized lawn, which made the task manageable but certainly a lot of work. As a 12-year-old it was probably more than I really wanted to get involved with and I took every opportunity to avoid it if possible. When we moved to a larger home and purchased a riding lawnmower it was one of the best days of my life!

While it might surprise some, push reel lawn mowers are still around and there’s still a considerable market for them. They’re attractive for a couple of reasons – they’re very affordable and they’re also low maintenance. With advancements in technology even these tried and tested old-fashioned technologies have improved and if you are in the market for one of these, the Great States 415-16 16-Inch Push Reel Lawn Mower is a good option. You can expect to pay no more than a couple hundred dollars for one of these.

A Manageable Cut

Some of the more advanced riding lawnmowers have cutting decks with widths of 50 inches or more, which cuts a wide swath through your grass. Even if you’ve got a typical gas powered push mower the cutting deck is usually at least 24 inches – you won’t get that with the Great States Push Reel Lawn Mower. This mower has a cutting width of about 16 inches and while that may sound unimpressive it’s probably all most people can handle when pushing a manual lawnmower like this. It will take you a little longer to cut your lawn, but it really depends on what your priorities are, whether this is a good thing or not.

Reliable Wheels

If you’re going to get years of use out of a lawnmower like this you need a reliable set of wheels and this particular push real lawnmower has 10 inch ball bearing wheels which are designed to turn easily and last a long time. They are your typical plastic lawnmower wheels, but the interior design of the wheels is made to keep you moving.

Able to Resist the Elements

As there are no engine parts or spark plugs in this machine you would think it has the potential to last you a long time, but not if it can’t handle the elements very well. This Great States push reel lawnmower has a special powder coating on it that’s designed to stop it from rusting; as long as you take care not to leave it out in the rain you should be able to prevent this lawnmower from rusting for quite a long time.

Staying Sharp

According to the manufacturer the blades on this manual push reel lawnmower are specially heat-treated, which helps them to stay sharp longer. Obviously the biggest concern with a push reel lawnmower is having nice sharp blades, as otherwise it can be quite a chore trying to cut through your grass. While this certainly sounds like a positive feature, unfortunately many customers that have purchased this product haven’t found these blades to be very sharp at all.

Customers that have complained about the sharpness of the blades have done so because they found it very hard to cut through the grass, and when they were able to move forward some customers suggest the blades simply pushed the lawn down and didn’t really cut it. A lawnmower that doesn’t cut grass is obviously not of much use, so this is certainly a concern.

A Friend to the Environment

Perhaps the biggest attraction of a push reel lawnmower is that it has zero impact on the environment. You don’t need any gas and you don’t have to worry about disposing of batteries once the product’s life cycle ends – that means your conscience can be completely clear that you haven’t purchased a product that will add to the already-mounting issues that we have with our environment.

More Things You May Not like

Before running out and purchasing a push reel lawnmower like this there are some things you’ll want to give serious consideration to. First of all, it’s important to keep in mind that even if you purchase a push reel lawnmower with the sharpest of blades it’s still going to be a lot more work than your typical lawnmower. If you have health problems that make cutting the lawn difficult already, it’s probably best to avoid a machine like this. It’s also probably not the best idea if you have a very large yard as even the healthiest person will have difficulty cutting a couple of acres of grass with a push reel lawnmower.

Another thing you may want to keep in mind is that some customers have suggested that the quality of workmanship of this Great States 415-16 16-Inch Push Reel Lawn Mower is not quite up to snuff. As we’ve already mentioned, some customers aren’t impressed with the sharpness of the blades. Another issue that’s cropped up is that the way the handle attaches to the mower is poorly designed and the pins used to attach it can come loose or even break in a relatively short period of time. It’s important to keep in mind, though, that a lot of customers are quite satisfied with the construction of this manual lawnmower, so this may not be a major issue.

Not for Everybody

A push reel lawnmower like this product by Great States is not for everybody, but if you’re not afraid of a little hard work and you want to do your part for the environment, a lawnmower such as this can be a great purchase. It’s also a big plus that you won’t have to worry about a lot of maintenance issues.
