There’s one main reason I’ve always hesitated and decided against purchasing a cordless electric mower and it’s a simple reason – I have serious concerns that they can last long enough on one charge to finish cutting my lawn. I have friends with these types of mowers and I’ve heard them all complain on several occasions about having to cut their lawn in shifts. That’s simply not something I’m willing to do, so until now I’ve stayed far away from this type of mower.
I do own several Black & Decker cordless power tools and I know these are quite reliable items that tend to last long enough to get the job done – for that reason I was willing to take a closer look at cordless battery-powered mowers when I found a model by Black & Decker. The Black & Decker CM1936 19-Inch 36-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower actually has a lot of power and great features for a cordless electric mower, but it doesn’t come cheaply. Depending on the time of year you can expect to pay anywhere from $600 up to about $1000 for this mower.
There’s no doubt that the fact this mower is cordless has to be one of its biggest attractions. When you take the plunge and decide to purchase a cordless mower you no longer have to worry about accidentally running over the wire while you cut your lawn and you don’t have to worry about the damage you’re doing to the environment should you instead choose a gas-powered model.
The 36-volt battery that comes standard with this Black & Decker cordless lawnmower is designed to cut up to 12,000 ft.² of lawn – which is impressive enough – but if that’s still not quite enough for you, the great thing about this mower is that not only are the batteries rechargeable they are also interchangeable. That means if you have an extra-large lawn to cut you can simply purchase a second battery, keep both fully charged before cutting, and you’ll probably never have to worry about running out of juice before you’re done cutting the lawn. Best of all, changing the battery in the CM1936 is simple – you just lift the old one out and put the new one in.
One Touch Wheel Adjustment
With this mower you don’t have to worry about struggling to adjust the height of the wheels on your lawnmower either. There is one simple lever you use to quickly lift or lower your wheels and you can adjust it up to 3½ inches high. After watching this process in action I can tell you it couldn’t get any easier.
This mower doesn’t have the largest cutting deck at only 19 inches, but it’s still wide enough to get your lawn cut in a reasonable amount of time. There are certainly mowers out there with a lot wider cutting decks, but almost all of these are gas-powered models and you have to weigh the damage to the environment you’re doing against your small savings in time.
Two Year Warranty
The warranty on this Black & Decker cordless lawnmower is fairly competitive at two years for most parts and labor, but the cutting deck itself actually comes with a limited lifetime warranty, which is even more impressive. There’s no doubt that Black & Decker stands by their products as I can tell you from personal experience, and this is just another example of that.
Mulch It or Bag It
This cordless Black & Decker mower also comes with a standard option to switch between mulching and bagging your grass clippings. If you prefer to bag your clippings you can simply attach the included grass catching bag to the back of your mower; if you prefer the mulch option there’s a simple attachment that plugs into the back of the mower as well. You can also purchase an optional side discharge attachment for this mower too, although it does not come with it.
Like most electric and battery powered lawnmowers the Black & Decker CM1936 has an easy start engine that’s a lot simpler than most gas-powered models. To get this mower going you simply insert a key, pull back on the lever, push the button, and away you go.
One complaint directed at this mower by a few customers is that the power output simply isn’t up to snuff. Customers that complained about this issue suggested that the mower tended to bog down when dealing with taller or wet grass and would often overheat in the process. It would be easy to ignore this complaint if it was only made by one or two people, but I ran across quite a few reviews of customers with this type complaint so it definitely seems to be a legitimate concern.
Not so Mulch
The other serious problem that seems to be fairly common with this particular Black & Decker cordless mower is that the mulch feature doesn’t seem to work very well. In some cases customers complained that it really didn’t mulch at all and in other cases customers complained that it actually tore up their lawn when they switched over to the mulch feature.
Still Not Sold on the Cordless
As far as cordless battery powered lawnmowers go this Black & Decker CM1936 is one of the most innovative I’ve found in my personal research journey. I like the fact that you can quickly swap out the batteries, and the one touch wheel adjustment is a big plus. But the concerns about this mower’s cutting power and mulching capabilities would certainly make me think long and hard before purchasing this model.
